Khattar's decision to step down comes amid mounting tensions within the ruling alliance between BJP and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). The Chief Minister, who is also eyeing a Lok Sabha seat from Karnal, has purportedly instructed all ministers in his cabinet to tender their resignations.
The impending resignation of Khattar comes on the heels of JJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala's decision to sever ties with the alliance. Independent MLA Nayan Pal Rawat hinted at the fragile state of the alliance, stating to news agency ANI that while cracks have emerged, certain independent MLAs continue to support the Khattar-led government, ensuring its survival.
The rift between BJP and JJP has been exacerbated by disagreements over seat allocations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The crisis further intensified after BJP's Hisar MP, Brijendra Singh, defected to Congress, dealing a significant blow to the already strained coalition.
The BJP-JJP alliance was formed following the 2019 assembly polls when BJP fell short of a majority with 46 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly. With BJP holding 41 seats and support from six independent MLAs, and JJP with 10 MLAs, the alliance secured a government. However, with the impending separation of JJP, BJP is expected to have the backing of 48 MLAs.
As the political landscape in Haryana undergoes rapid shifts, all eyes are on Manohar Lal Khattar's anticipated resignation and its repercussions on the state's governance and future political alliances.
