In Goa, on March 15, 2021, Bumrah wed Sanjana Ganesan, a model and television presenter. Ganesan, who is originally from Pune in Maharashtra, is a former Miss India finalist who also competed in MTV's Splitsvilla in 2014. Bumrah and Ganesan first met in an interview during the 2013 Indian Premier League.  After that initial meeting, they became friends, and after dating for two years, they got married in 2021. On 4 September 2023, their son Angad was born.

Bumrah made his domestic debut in the country in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also helped his team win its first title. During the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy season, he made his first-class debut against Vidarbha. Bumrah was signed by the Mumbai Indians for the 2013 season of IPL.  Since then, he has played for MI, contributing to the team's title wins five times.  With 165 wickets in 133 matches, he ranks second for MI behind Lasith Malinga in terms of wicket taking.

In January 2016, during India's tour of Australia, Bumrah made his debut for the international team. He took the most wickets in the T20 series. In 2016, he was the highest wicket-taker in a calendar year in T20I cricket, with 28 wickets.  He made his Test debut in 2018 against South Africa.  He has been the vice-captain of the Indian team in Test cricket since December 2023 and has also captained the team three times in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. He was named in the ICC Men's Test Team of the Year in 2018 and 2024, in the ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year in 2017 and 2018, and in the ICC Men's T20I Team of the Year in 2024.  He was also included in the 2011–2020 ICC Men's T20I Team of the Decade. Bumrah was awarded the Polly Umrigar Award by the BCCI thrice, in 2018–19, 2021–22 and 2023-24.  In 2022, he also made the Wisden Cricketers of the Year list.
